## Three things most homeowners never hear about their door

It is the heaviest thing in your house that moves every day. A few plain facts explain almost every service call we get.

Counterbalance

**The opener does not lift the door. The springs do.** The motor only guides a load the springs already carry, which is why a door that suddenly feels impossibly heavy is a spring problem and not a motor problem.

Service life

**Springs are rated in cycles, not years.** The springs commonly supplied on the market have a service life of about 10,000 cycles, which door manufacturer [Garaga](https://www.garaga.com/blog/the-secrets-of-garage-door-torsion-springs) puts at over 13 years at two openings a day. Four openings a day halves that.

Safety

**A torsion spring is the one repair to never do yourself.** The door and access systems trade association is blunt about it: [DASMA TDS-171](https://www.dasma.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/TDS171.pdf) says spring replacement "should only be performed by a trained door systems technician."
